What Is Pest Control
What Is Pest Control?
Pest control is the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, a member of the animal kingdom that impacts adversely on human activities. The human response depends on the importance of the damage done and will range from tolerance, through deterrence and management, to attempts to completely eradicate the pest. Pest control measures may be performed as part of an integrated pest management strategy.
In agriculture, pests are kept at bay by cultural, chemical, and biological means. Plowing and cultivation of the soil before sowing mitigate the pest burden and there is a modern trend to limit the use of pesticides as far as possible. This can be achieved by monitoring the crop, only applying insecticides when necessary, and growing varieties and crops which are resistant to pests. Where possible, biological means are used, encouraging the natural enemies of the pests and introducing suitable predators or parasites.
In homes and urban environments, the pests are the rodents, birds, insects, and other organisms that share the habitat with humans, and that feed on and spoil possessions. Control of these pests is attempted through exclusion, repulsion, physical removal, or chemical means. Alternatively, various methods of biological control can be used including sterilization programs.
Different Types Of Pest Control.
1. Chemical Pest Control. This method involves using chemical treatments to deter any kind of pest.
2. Biological Pest Control. It involves the use of living organisms to control a pest population.
3. Electronic Pest Control.
4. Physical Pest Control.

Pests taking over your home is not anyone’s idea of great company, and therefore taking measures to eradicate pests from the home is common.
Clearance Of The Hurdles.
Pests come in all different shapes and sizes. They don’t necessarily have to be dangerous to be considered a pest. A lot of the time, pests are simply a nuisance. Advantages Of Pest Control.
Slow development of resistance to pesticides. Pests can develop a resistance to pesticides over time. When the applications of the chemicals are used repeatedly, the pests can develop a resistance to the pesticides via natural selection, where the pests that survive the application of the chemicals will pass on their genes to their offspring.
This leads to the creation of “super pests”. IPM reduces the risk of this occurring as the methods adopted by IPM are natural.
Maintain The Balance Of The Ecosystem.
The use of pesticides may eradicate the pest population. However, there is a risk that non-target organisms are also affected, which can result in species loss. IPM can eradicate pests while maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
Effective costing. The reduced usage of pesticides is more cost-effective in the long term, as IPM controls pests when there are surges, as opposed to the regularly timed application of pesticides.
Disadvantages Of Pest Control.
More involvement in the technicalities of the method. Individual farmers and all those involved in IPM have to be educated about their options in the various methods available, which often take time.
Time and energy-consuming process. Application of IPM takes time and has to be closely monitored, as the practice of IPM has many different methods integrated to provide the most effective pest control methods. Different pests have different control methods, and it is necessary to monitor which methods are the best for specific pests.
However, the disadvantages are easily offset with the establishment of organizations that provide training and education to IPM practitioners.
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Agriculture provides support and training to farmers who apply IPM to control the pests on their farms. As the practice grows, the application of the IPM process can become easier over time.
